Actor’s PhilosophyExperience – One Year Residency

Actor's Philosophy Residency

concept, perspective and methodology introduced by Jayampathi Guruge

The space is open to Actors, Performers and Researchers willing to collaborate and support each others’ learning process. Your mentors, guides or resource persons will include both residential artists as well as those joining in online from various parts of the world. Each one a master in their respective fields, and ready to share their knowledge and experiences. Each of the limited number of participants will be guided towards performing as solo artists as well as creating collaborative pieces, while learning how to document their journey through their life as part of the Actor’s Philosophy.

Your original creative work will have the opportunity to tour locally and internationally as a part of the One Year Residency. And while we don’t intend to provide you with a degree in the conventional sense, we will guide you to create your own  original Scripts, Productions, a video Interview series that will document your progression, a dedicated Photo Gallery,  CV , website and an Actor’s showreel.

Language support

Language is a culture. This course is also inclusive of the space for nourishment through diverse sound/noise patterns, listening to another’s opinion, and respecting another’s thought. Although the course has been structured to flow in the English language, there is freedom to use a vernacular language in writing or acting. Research articles, Journals, Resource packs, Thesis, and Scripts compiled by you must be translated to English and handed over before the deadlines. We look forward to providing maximum support to facilitate the group’s communication, support the writing process, and improve the ability to speak the Language.

Letter For Applicant

Dear Applicant,

The concept of Actors’ Philosophy is one milestone in the process of getting to know the me that is not myself that exists in our minds in states of being; be it in the performativity of life, in acting or performing. The Actors’ Philosophy Residency has been formulated as a way of sharing this exploration, and the knowledge and experience that I have gathered in the process of trying to understand it.

Once you apply, being chosen means living together with a limited number of participants for a period of one year. Rather than delivering instructions, the program focuses on giving you time to learn and understand for yourself. Sometimes that may be easy. At other times it may be difficult. In this context I expect that you will learn for yourself, while being aware of your actions in the given moment as well as your future expectations. Give yourself the time that is needed for understanding yourself within this process.

We need to be conscious of the differences in others, and be well meaning in our sharing of the limited resources available to us. The close knit ties that form as a consequence, with each other and with society, provide us the opportunity to identify each others’ actions.

Therein, it is kindly and clearly stated that the exclusion or bullying of anyone within the group on the basis of race, religion or the conflict of personal beliefs will not be tolerated. We should strive to understand that the human being is one who is formed within varying cultural systems, ideologies, belief systems and social strata. I believe that as a human, you will act with human respect towards all those born into this cosmos.

Let’s work collectively to journey towards something that will sustain us beyond this year, and that will enable us to solve any problem that we face carefully and consciously.

Your investment in this program, be it money or time, or your patience and tolerance, or any situation you experience in your network of emotions should lead your  mind, body and words to act inline with a philosophy that is good, one that you trust as a result of those experiences. It’s vital that this is embedded not only in our artistic creations but also in our way of life.

The entire universe is created and contained in your mind which you yourself have made. We carry out our human existence through repeatedly interacting, fighting with and tightening our bond to this selfmade universe. Being aware of this present moment, we are able to understand the  ever changing nature of this reality.

There is much that you will understand deeply within the process that lies ahead.
